Instead of learning to swim in an infinite ocean of uncertainty, most people will seek desperately for a floating belief system to cling to.
Choosing from a variety of belief systems, be they religious, scientific, or political. Most will choose ones that are comfortable and require the least amount of cognitive dissonance to maintain.
To make their chosen belief systems float better many will attach dogmas to it.
Holding onto false constructs only leads to fear and anxiety. So people tend to find a floating belief system with the largest number of people already attached to it. Some can be as large as ocean liners and even floating islands.
And yet, no matter how safe and stable these colossal constructs seem, all they can offer is a false security.
True security only exists in the tangible, rational, and cogent. An unfabricated world view built on a foundation of the observed not the imagined. Available to those who embrace uncertainty rather than clinging to wishful thinking.
Those with the intellectual courage to build a tiny raft out of the comprehensible can explore the oceans of uncertainty guided by possibilities, probabilities, and potentials.
Every magnification of the cognizable will only expand the vastness of uncertainty. "The more you know, the more you realize you don't know." Said by some famous philosophical dude.
These are the bold pioneers of neoteric terra firma. The coherent bedrock from which to build tiny veritable foundations of reality.
From here we can observe the vast omniverse with fearless intellectual honesty. Courageously embracing the infinity of uncertainty. When we push the boundaries of the authentic, all of our possibilities are real.
Adam, great piece!
This is so amazingly accurate.
I’ve traveled extensively, lived on and off the grid, moved in different political and social circles, explored different cultures, and in my 60 plus years on the planet have come to realize that my greatest asset has been embracing and understanding just how little I know.
